How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 using the grey wire. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can trigger spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky as there are two different connector pins, and they serve different purposes however the best way to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should be reading approximately 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this part, check for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll i had massive power loss like the engine is running out of gas or injectors aren't firing anymore. I took out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when i start the engine without sparks, the ones that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one stays closed. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I think the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it is running fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c, even if I unplug it. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, i believe that i've eliminated everything else. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor.
